Elop to Tassie's Wilderness Love Wedding Stories from the Apple Isle

Born and raised in the shadow of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, I’ve spent my life exploring Tasmania’s wild places and sharing them with others. After photographing my first elopement at Cradle Mountain in 2016, I became obsessed with the magic that happens when couples strip back the wedding traditions and focus purely on their commitment to each other in Tasmania’s extraordinary landscapes.

Eight years and over 120 elopements later, “Elope to Tassie” has grown from a spark of passion into Tasmania’s dedicated resource for couples seeking an alternative to traditional weddings. My mission is simple: to help adventurous couples create meaningful elopement experiences that showcase the breathtaking diversity of my island home.

Why Tasmania?

Tasmania isn’t just another destination – it’s a place where ancient rainforests meet pristine beaches, where you can experience snow-capped mountains and vibrant coastal sunsets in a single day. Our island offers a rare combination of accessible wilderness and world-class food, wine and accommodation.

What makes Tasmania truly special for elopements is the sense of intimate seclusion. Within a 90-minute drive from Hobart or Launceston, you can be standing in locations that feel like the edge of the earth, with no one else in sight. It’s the perfect canvas for couples who want their commitment to each other witnessed primarily by nature.

The Elope to Tassie Philosophy

I believe elopements aren’t just small weddings – they’re intentional experiences that prioritise authenticity over tradition. My approach centres on three core principles:

  1. Connection to Place – Your elopement should be deeply intertwined with the landscape, whether that’s the moody drama of Cradle Mountain, the orange lichen-covered rocks of the Bay of Fires, or the towering eucalypts of the Tarkine rainforest.

  2. Meaningful Moments – Without the pressure of entertaining guests, we can create space for genuine moments that reflect your relationship – whether that’s summiting a mountain at dawn, sharing whisky by a alpine lake, or dancing barefoot on a deserted beach.

  3. Local Knowledge – I work exclusively with Tasmanian vendors who bring authentic local expertise to your day. From celebrants who understand how to create ceremony magic in changeable weather to florists who forage native botanicals, your elopement will be infused with Tasmanian character.

My Journey

My own path to specialising in elopements wasn’t straightforward. After studying environmental science and working as a wilderness guide, I fell into wedding photography almost by accident when friends asked me to document their small ceremony at Freycinet National Park.

What struck me immediately was how different the intimate wilderness ceremony felt compared to traditional weddings I’d attended. There was a raw authenticity – a focus on the couple’s connection to each other and the landscape – that resonated deeply with me.

As I photographed more elopements, I noticed couples struggling with the same challenges: finding Tasmania-specific information about permits, weather patterns, and logistical considerations for remote locations. “Elope to Tassie” was born from the desire to share my local knowledge and create a dedicated resource for couples drawn to Tasmania’s wild beauty.

Beyond the Blog

When I’m not helping couples elope, you’ll find me:

  • Hiking Tasmania’s remote trails with my kelpie, Scout
  • Kayaking the sheltered coves of Bruny Island
  • Sampling the latest offerings from Tasmania’s whisky distilleries
  • Advocating for wilderness preservation and sustainable tourism
  • Volunteering with the Wellington Park track maintenance program

Let’s Create Your Tasmanian Story

Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging vows with Cradle Mountain as your witness, celebrating with a picnic on a secluded beach, or arriving by helicopter to a remote alpine plateau, I’m here to help make it happen.

Tasmania offers extraordinary possibilities for couples brave enough to follow their own path. I’d be honoured to help you create an elopement experience that celebrates both your relationship and the wild beauty of my island home.
